Hitachi hits 100Gbytes for laptops

Antony Savvas

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and Fujitsu are both shipping mammoth 100Gbyte hard disk drives for laptop PCs.

With demand for laptops growing fast and increased demand for storage hungry multimedia applications, both companies feel they are addressing demand for the powerful 2.5in drives.

The Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 series also has a disk speed of 7,200 rpm, which is must faster than the normal 5,400 rpm notebook speed, and as fast as most desktop drives.

The extra speed means there is a faster media-transfer rate. While Fujitsu's MHV2100BH also has a maximum capacity of 100Gbyte, it only spins at 5,400rpm.
