Volvo adopts internal digital certificates

Volvo Group has adopted an internal system for generating digital certificates for its encrypted e-mail system.

The car and truck giant has chosen an nShield hardware security module from nCipher to support the system.

Volvo is using nShield to protect the cryptographic keys that underpin its internal global Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Certificate Authority (CA).

The PKI is being used to deliver strong authentication, encryption and message integrity for securing the e-mail service that is used among over 80,000Volvo Group employees worldwide.

Volvo’s decision to develop its own in-house PKI and CA to issue and manage digital certificates, digital signatures and encryption means that it is independent from other certificate authorities, and has complete control over its enterprise security.
