EMC has updated its EMC Legato NetWorker software to make it easier to back up data from storage devices attached to the network.

The data storage company is allowing data streams based on the networking protocol - Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) - to be copied and shifted between disc arrays.

In the past, backup via NDMP could only be performed to/from tape.

EMC said that by making the NetWorker product more flexible organisations can improve the performance of their Network Attached Storage (Nas) devices. This will give them the ability to back up and restore data to disc rather than just tape.

Evangeline Simones, analyst at the Evaluator Group, said, "With improvements in the NDMP space, EMC clearly has its leadership stake in the ground for backup-to-disc software and Nas-based back-ups.”

“This is important to customers so they can simplify their data protection and storage management activities without sacrificing robust functionality," she said.
