BCS member swaps bytes for Basra

John Kavanagh
BCS North London Branch secretary John Ryan is swapping his suit and PC for army uniform and gun and is going to Iraq for eight months as a member of the Territorial Army.

Ryan, whose normal job is that of business development manager at IT services company Nexus Management, has been called up for duty with the regular British Army.

He will command a section of eight other TA soldiers in southern Iraq. Their duties will include patrolling, escorting convoys and the security and defence of sites.

He plans to keep in touch with family and friends in the UK by testing remote voice over IP links while off-duty.

"I may even try to set up a local BCS - the Basra Computer Society," Ryan joked.
