MS users seek options

Lindsay Clark
A growing number of European governments and businesses are examining alternatives to Microsoft technologies, according to a report from Gartner.

Licensing difficulties, security breaches and the grass-roots power of open source software are encouraging users to seek alternatives to Microsoft.

"Governments and businesses, especially outside the US, are increasingly interested in pursuing strategies that insulate them from Microsoft's growing influence on the IT industry, even if alternate solutions aren't exactly a perfect fit," said Gartner.

Linux and other open-source software products such as the Apache web server were found to be the most popular alternatives to Microsoft.
