Compaq and HP announce new Windows XP systems

Although Microsoft will not officially release its Windows XP operating system until 25 October, it has allowed PC makers to begin shipping machines loaded with the new OS from 24 September.

Compaq announced the roll-out of three new PCs and the enhancement of its existing Presario 5000 with a new processor and the Windows XP operating system.

The new Presario 700 notebook features a 900MHz mobile AMD Duron processo, 256Mbytes of RAM, a 20Gbyte hard drive and the Windows XP operating system. The notebook, which has a 14.1in TFT display, is available now for $1,299 (£888) from the company's Web site.

The Presario 2700 features Intel's 1GHz mobile Pentium III Processor-M, formerly known as Tualatin. The 2700 has 256Mbytes of RAM, a 20Gbyte hard drive, a DVD drive and a 15in TFT display. The notebook is available now for $1,799 (£1,200) from the company's Web site.

Compaq also plans to launch a new desktop - the Presario 8000 - the company said in its statement. The desktop, based on processors running at up to 2GHz, will have a starting price of $1,199 (£800), the company said.

HP announced four new systems shipping with Windows XP on 24 September. The HP Pavilion 7955 desktop, which uses Intel's 1.5GHz Pentium 4 processor, has 256Mbytes of RAM, a 40Gbyte hard drive, a CD/RW drive and DVD drive, and is available for $949 (£650) from the company's Web site.

The HP Pavilion 7935, using AMD's 1.3GHz Athlon processor, includes 128Mbytes of RAM, a 40Gbyte hard drive, a CD-RW drive and a DVD drive, is also available for $749 (£500). Monitors are not included in the price of either Pavilion model.

HP also launched the Pavilion N5425 notebook, powered by AMD's 900MHz Athlon 4 processor. The N5425 has 256Mbytes of RAM, a 20Gbyte hard drive and a DVD/CD-RW combination drive. The notebook features a 14.1in TFT display. The N5425 is available from HP for $1,599 (£1,500).

HP also launched the Pavilion N5415 notebook, which uses AMD's 900MHz Duron processor, and includes 256Mbytes of RAM, a 10Gbyte hard drive, and a DVD drive. The Pavilion N5415, which also has a 14.1in display, is currently available for $1,199 (£800), the company said in a statement.
