IT managers will soon be able to develop, manage and deliver applications to wireless devices using tools previously only available for fixed lines, according to IBM.

Big Blue's WebSphere Everyplace Suite is a server software package that will be available towards the end of this year. It includes transcoding software for automatically translating data into the correct format for the device requesting it, as well as Tivoli's Subscription Manager which allows businesses to track and manage devices.

Nick Jones, analyst with research company Gartner, warned that transcoding was no "magic bullet" and would not necessarily be able to create user interfaces specialised enough for the device to be acceptable in a business-to-business environment.

IBM expects that in the next few years, more people will use wireless devices than PCs to access the Internet, with e-business conducted by what it calls "pervasive computing".
