The mid-range, rack-mounted server uses between two and eight copper-based silicon-on-insulator microprocessors - either the RS64 III at speeds of 500MHz or the RS64 IV at 750MHz.
The p660-6M1 comes with 2Gbytes of memory and can be expanded to 64Gbytes. It is equipped with 14 hot-plug Peripheral Component Interconnect slots, expandable to 56 slots.
IBM priced the p660-6M1 at $62,000 (£42,000) in the US, marketing the server for Web functions and processing Java programs.
To save money, the servers can be purchased with processors that can be disabled and then later activated at the customer's request.
