What's so real about 'real time'?

The industry's latest buzzword is real time analytics. Ovum analyst Helen Schwenk discusses how the technology can be used for data analysis.

It's easy to get seduced by the phrase and the notion of 'real time'. Its very suggestion conjures up a picture of responsiveness and immediacy, bringing to life the world of analytics. No wonder vendors are fond of it.

One segment of the IT industry that has caught on to this trend is the business intelligence (BI) community. It's using it to gather momentum behind what has been termed realtime analytics. But there's one big problem with this phrase - 'real time' doesn't always mean what you expect it to mean. So let me clear up the confusion for you. Realtime analytics is all about using intelligent information to support the decision- making process.
