The m-payment circus rolls into town


The Mobile Payment Services Association aims to become the “Visa/MasterCard” for mobile operators. Ovum analyst Duncan Brown looks into whether it is likely to take off.


On Wednesday 26 February, Orange, Telefonica Moviles, T-Mobile, and Vodafone formed a new association to drive interoperable mobile payments.

Exactly one month before, I ranted at the plethora of m-payment standards initiatives in despair. "The best way to kill off a standards initiative is to create a competing one," I wrote. There are at least six initiatives, creating a standards circus that is stalling growth of m-commerce.
