The next version of Staroffice, Sun's open source application suite, to be released later this year, will be file-compatible with Microsoft Office XP, writes Daniel Thomas.

Staroffice 6.0 will include XML file format specifications, which will make the process of file sharing much easier.

Sun said it will start to put filters in place to ensure file compatibility between Staroffice 6.0 and Microsoft's Office XP application suite as soon as XP is released at the end of this month. The current 5.2 version of Star Office is available for Solaris, Windows and Linux.

To improve performance, Staroffice 6.0 is expected to allow individual applications to be launched separately. Support for some Asian languages may also be included.
