Openwave is to make it easier and cheaper for mobile users of Microsoft’s Hotmail e-mail and MSN Instant Messenger systems to communicate on their devices.

Instant Messaging is increasingly being used by some business users to communicate in real time with colleagues, but it can be tricky for users to set-up and use once installed.

Openwave has updated its Phone Suite software to include improved support for two of the most popular Microsoft applications. The client software will be loaded onto phones from three European manufacturers, including a model from Sagem.

Improved features include allowing Hotmail users to read and reply to messages offline, instead of having to stay online and paying more to their operator as a result.

On the instant messaging side of things, the enhanced Openwave solution allows users to continue communicating with each other in real time when their data connections get cut as a result of overloaded networks. This is possible with the use of an integrated SMS facility which automatically cuts in when MSN Messenger becomes disconnected.

In addition, the Openwave software can also automatically log users into their Hotmail and MSN Messenger accounts via Microsoft Passport as soon as the phone is switched on, again saving time and effort for the user.

Openwave has yet to work on any solutions which will allow users to do the same with Yahoo or AOL instant messaging systems.
