IBM has upgraded its z/VSE mainframe operating system to further support ecommerce and widening Linux use.

The z/VSE V4.2 system is designed to support growing mainframe applications and deliver stronger investment protection, said IBM.

Klaus Goebel, development executive project manager for z/VSE, said, "Many customers are beginning to put new Linux applications on the same IBM System z9 mainframe that also runs their production z/VSE applications.

"This integrated approach is designed to offer the best of Linux, and the potential for low total cost of ownership of the System z9 mainframe."

IBM's mainframe virtualisation system z/VM is playing a central role in these developments, said Goebel.
