Use of open source software (OSS) is increasing but
companies are still concerned about its security, areportfrom analyst firm Forrester
Research has found.
The survey of more than 2,200 IT executives and technology
decision-makers from companies in Canada, France, Germany, the UK,
and the US found that 46% had already implemented OSS or were
expanding or piloting OSS this year.
According to Forrester Research, more organisations are planning
to implement or expand their use of OSS than any other area of the
software market, such as business process management, application
lifecycle management, and enterprise service buses.
However, the study found that 45% of businesses are concerned
about the security implications of OSS.
Forrester Research has seen a spike in the number of client
enquiries about OSS. "These enquiries were especially interesting
because the majority were basic and came from large,
well-established companies," said Jeffrey Hammond, principal
analyst at Forrester Research.
