Number 4 leads the way in decyphering cryptarithm

Chelmsford reader Ivor Smith has been looking at the puzzle possibilities with multiplication sums of the special type NNN x NN = NNNN, where all nine digits 1 to 9 are present, once each with no zero. He has discovered that if the left hand number is 4, the position of the other digits can be deduced.
Here is the problem set out in conventional form, with the interior workings shown as Xs. See if you can identify the A to H series.
