Logitech has
manufactured
its one billionth computer mouse as the technology moves to its
40th birthday.
Logitech's one billionth mouse has been produced at its main
China factory.
The mouse now faces serious competition from touch and sensor
technolgies, with many laptop users relying on the touchpad built
into their machines. Touch screens are also expected to make a dent
in the mouse market.
The sale of desktop PCs has also declined, and these are usually
operated with a mouse.
The mouse has moved with the times down the years though.
Although the device's wire "tail" was the reason for its moniker,
many users have sliced that off with the use of infra-red, laser
and wireless devices.
Logitech's one billionth mouse came off the production line last
month and Logitech is now running a $1,000 reward competition to
find it.
The computer mouse turns 40 on 9 December - the 1968 date when
the mouse was first put through its paces by US researchers at
Stanford University.
