Solve the alphametic to help a penniless student

This very early alphametic is thought to have been sent by an impecunious undergraduate, when writing to his father in Victorian times, and is probably the most famous puzzle of its type. The student writes: "Dear Pater, I have spent all my allowance... please see below!"
