Make a constant of 21 to hex the conundrum

Tuesday 11 November 2008 10:44

This diagram shows how it is possible to distribute the consecutive series 1-to-12 around a hexagon, one number to each node, in such a way that each straight line of three numbers totals to a constant of 22. Discovering this layout formed the basis of our puzzler of May 20 earlier this year. Subsequently several readers pointed out two alternative layouts.

Later computer analysis brought forth a unique layout where the constant is 21 rather than 22. Finding this is this week's problem. For working purposes, assume the 12 is already positioned on the top node, as before.
