The BBC has appointed Erik Huggers as its new director of Future
Media and Technology division, which includes the
iPlayer.
Huggers, who worked on digital initiatives for Microsoft until
last year, will be responsible for the BBC’s online output,
broadband, interactive TV and mobile.
He will also be in charge of the BBC’s enterprise and broadcast
technology strategy and delivery.
His predecessor Ashley Highfield left the BBC in April to
become chief executive of on-demand online media player
Kangaroo,
a joint venture between BBC Worldwide, Channel 4 and ITV.
Announcing the appointment, BBC director-general Mark Thompson
said that Huggers had shown “tremendous commitment championing the
iPlayer”.
"I look forward to him bringing his drive and determination to
this new role, helping ensure the BBC is fit for the digital
future," he said.
Huggers takes up his post from 1 August, 2008.
