Teradata
, a provider of enterprise data warehouse appliances, has
introduced an entry-leveldata warehouse, designed for
lower-cost installations.
The company has traditionally focused on large-scale data
warehouses used by companies including
Ford,
Coca-Cola and
Iceland Foods in the UK, to
support company-wide business intelligence applications. It has now
expanded the range of products to support users that do not require
the enterprise features of its full-blown product.
With a price of $67,000 per terabyte, the
Teradata
550 is aimed at departmental data warehouse applications.
Designed to run a single application or support testing and
software development, the SMP 550 can handle up to six terabytes
and supports both Novell SUSE Linux 64-bit operating system and
Windows.
Along with the 550 appliance, the company has made available its
Teradata 12 database as a standalone product. This allows users to
run Teradata on their own Intel-based server hardware, rather than
use the Teradata appliance.
A free developer version of Teradata 12, called Express Edition,
is also available. Teradata said this works on Windows servers and
laptops and has been designed for software development, testing and
learning. Teradata Express Edition includes the Teradata 12
database and Teradata Tools and Utilities.
