Engineers at Penn State university are trying to run 100Gbps data rates overCat 7 copper cables. If successful, this would allow copper cables to handle data rates reserved for fibre-optic links.

"A rate of 100 Gigabit over 70 metres is definitely possible, and we are working on extending that to 100 metres, or about 328 feet," said Ali Enteshari, graduate student in electrical engineering.

The Penn State engineers presented their system to the IEEE High Speed Study Group last week in Atlanta.

At the start of this year, several local area network equipment suppliers launched 10G Ethernet products that furthered the standard in product categories and could be a sign that more advances are to come from the local area network industry.
