Volvo signs up to iPass Wi-Fi service

Volvo Group is migrating 17,000 staff in 180 countries to Wi-Fi and dial-up remote connectivity from iPass after signing a three-year deal with the access company.

Volvo chose iPass to replace its existing dial up services because it was able to provide additional Wi-Fi hotspot access to Volvo's corporate network at a lower cost because of its global footprint.

The deal gives Volvo staff access to wireless networks around the globe through the iPass network using Volvo's own client software all within a single contract, said the Volvo global IT purchasing department.

Volvo said, "The move is in response to a greater demand for mobile working facilities due to an increase in the number of Volvo managers, sales representatives, product developers, and support staff travelling around the world as we expand our global operations."

Migration to the iPass system is scheduled to be complete by end of 2007.
