Red Hat has posted an increase in sales for its first quarter, with revenue up 42%.

The Linux software firm saw sales reach £62.5m for the three months ending 31 May, with net profits rising from £7.2m in the corresponding quarter last year to £8.5m this time round.

During the quarter, Red Hat launched version 5 of its flagship Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system.

"We started the quarter in high gear with the release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, and followed with important launches for JBoss and our middleware strategy", said Charlie Peters, CFO at Red Hat.

“Our investments in sales, marketing and R&D during the quarter set a solid foundation for the balance of the year," he said.
