IT jobs are heading north as a result of
increased regional development grants and big businesses
establishing new operations there, and South East IT workers are
planning to follow the work.
Research among 725 IT professionals by recruitment website
CWjobs.co.uk (a sister
company of computerweekly.com) shows 88% of IT workers in the South
East are considering relocating within the next five years.
Less than half (46%) of IT workers in the South East still
believe the best IT jobs are based in London. Google and IBM top
their wish list as employers, and both have a presence in the North
– 69% of those questioned said they would be interested in working
for these companies.
The BBC is also seen as an attractive employer, with 63% of IT
workers wanting to work for the broadcaster, which is relocating a
large chunk of its operations to Manchester.
A further 62% have their sights set on the new
Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh.
One-in-four IT professionals believe they could
earn the same or more money outside of London due to the skills
shortage in developing regions such as the North West.
