The question: How do I get into project
management?
I am a software developer in a small software house. I have a
Prince2 qualification and I manage and work as a team member on
my projects. I wish to move to a
fully fledged project management role, preferably in a big
company. Where do I go from here?
The solution: Press for experience to back
qualification
You have a project management qualification that is in huge demand,
so the right job is out there. On the other hand, you may lack
experience, so you need to build up your management skills to
secure that new role.
Talk to your employers so that they understand your aspiration
to be a project manager. Ask to work on a variety of projects and
put yourself forward to lead them.
Once you have spoken to your boss, if the outcome is that you
need more training, I would recommend a couple of further courses
to elevate your management skills.
Comptia's Project+ will give you the confidence required to
manage a team as it trains professionals in basic business systems
and procedures, and the Project Management Institute's PMP course
is a globally recognised qualification that is highly respected by
senior professionals.
Either of these courses would build up skills that could be
applied across a range of business sectors.
Both are available as accelerated courses of five to seven days,
which means that you do not have to invest months to reach the
desired level to take you on to your next job.
