Ingres has announced availability of Ingres Icebreaker,
an open source integrated enterprise-class database and operating
system that is designed to lower the cost and complexity of system
maintenance and support.
Ingres Icebreaker is designed to be a
self-contained software stack. It includes only those parts of an
operating system that are relevant for its use as a database
appliance, reducing complexity and making more efficient use of
resources.
Ingres said additional benefits include ease of installation,
with the database and OS installed in a single step.
Lower cost of ownership through the open source model is also
promised, and database administrators can quickly deploy database
services that are easily accessible through standard APIs.
Emma McGrattan, senior vice president of engineering at Ingres,
said, "Ingres Icebreaker brings together the power of business open
source software with the economic benefits of a single, integrated
software package.”
Ingres Icebreaker runs on any x86-compatible, 32-bit capable,
server hardware appropriate for Linux.
