In the keynote address at the opening of the
Communications Management Association's annual conference in
London, CMA
chairman Carolyn Kimber warned that the industry must embrace the
new demands of fixed mobile convergence.
She urged telecommunication companies to make international
roaming and data tariffs affordable in order to support the needs
of business users.
"Given that we work and travel internationally, it is important
we don't incur huge tariffs. Businesses want affordable mobile
roaming," she said.
Without cheaper roaming, Kimber said businesses would be unable
to afford the benefits of fixed mobile convergence.
Another challenge for the industry was bandwidth, according to
Kimber. She said there was concern the industry would be unable to
introduce greater bandwidth fast enough to meet user demands. And
she argued that next generation DSL 2+ broadband, which is expected
in the UK within five years, was not good enough.
"By the time we wake up to fibre we will be 15 years behind
other countries," she warned.
