Storage supplier EMC and security specialist RSA are poised to
offer businesses a range of security technologies that combine
elements from both businesses, following the takeover of RSA by EMC
in September.
The companies said work to integrate their technologies was well
advanced and would give IT departments a range of advanced options
to secure their data.
"We are building a common security platform that will take RSA
technology around authentication, access control, auditing, key
management and policy management and build a consistent set of
capabilities across EMC's product set," said Rob Sadowski, director
of product marketing at EMC.
EMC's strategy is to incorporate advanced RSA encryption into
its storage systems to allow businesses to encrypt data across
their networks without having to buy multiple key management
systems.
The company is also working in partnership with rival IT
security suppliers to develop common key management standards that
ultimately could allow IT departments to deploy a single key
management system across their organisation.
"Encryption should be deployed selectively based on the need to
mitigate a particular risk," said Sadowski.
"One of the biggest risks organisations might face is backing up
data. We have heard many stories about tapes falling off a truck or
getting lost."
EMC also plans to offer a secure remote maintenance service that
would allow its engineers to access user companies' storage systems
to upgrade or maintain equipment.
IT departments would be able to use a web portal to give
maintenance staff permission to access particular discs for
maintenance work. The portal would issue staff with a one-time
password granting access to systems.
