Growing demand for Unix and Java skills are driving the
recovery in the jobs market, the latest Computer Weekly/SSL
Quarterly Survey of Appointments Data and Trends has
revealed.
Unix topped the list of the technical skills most in demand. SQL,
the previous leader, fell to fourth place. Solaris and AIX versions
of Unix also saw strong increases in demand.
Java has jumped from sixth place to second place - its highest
level for three years - and was mentioned in more job
advertisements than any other skill.
"We are seeing a lot of Java, particularly in mobile wireless, J2ME
vacancies, because of the embedded code on mobile phone pages and
set-top boxes," said Steve Gallucci, sales director of recruitment
company S.Com.
Gallucci said it was becoming particularly difficult to find enough
skilled embedded Java programmers with security clearance to meet
the demands of the defence industry.
Demand for Microsoft Office skills has also risen, pushing it to
third place and C++ and SQL Server were in sixth and seventh place.
SAP skills have fallen nine places in the table to 28, reflecting
the downturn in the manufacturing industry.
