IBM is this week launching social networking software
for businesses so their employees can get the same kind of
networking benefits seen in MySpace and Facebook.
The new Lotus Connections product will be formally introduced at
this week’s
IBM Lotusphere user conference in
Orlando.
The
New York Times reports that Lotus
Connections will be available later this year, and will allow
employees to set up virtual worlds in which they can meet
like-minded colleagues within the company, and exchange ideas
with them.
The networking opportunity is designed to increase productivity
within the company.
Jeff Schick, IBM vice-president for social software, told the
New York Times that the product would “unlock the latent expertise
in an organisation“.
Lotus Connections has various components, including activities,
communities, profiles and blogs, all aimed at getting the right
employees to connect with each other.
