Microsoft issued seven security patches on Tuesday, with three of them deemed “critical”.

The critical patches were for the Internet Explorer browser, the Visual Studio 2005 development platform and the Windows Media Format software.

All three are designed to prevent remote attackers from taking over users’ systems.

There were four further security patches described as “important” by Microsoft.

These fixes included vulnerabilities in the SNMP and Remote Installation Service features in Windows, and the Outlook Express e-mail client. These three also tackle remote code execution threats by outside attackers.

The fourth important patch was for a flaw in Windows, which allows access privileges in systems to be upgraded without permission.
