The adoption rate of the open source Eclipse integrated
development environment has more than doubled in Europe, the Middle
East and Africa, industry analysts have revealed.
A survey of nearly 400 EMEA developers by analyst firm Evans
Data found that a third now use Eclipse, in a growing challenge to
Microsoft’s Visual Studio .net environment. Evans Data also
predicted that use of the Eclipse Rich Client Platform plug-in set
will triple within the next two years.
Evans Data president John Andrews said, “These results are
reflective of the overall market adoption we are seeing for Eclipse
adoption globally. The addition of the Rich Client Platform
provides the developers with a great advantage, being able to write
an application once and it will run on Windows, Mac OS and
Linux.”
The survey also found that 42% of EMEA developers use XML in
their work – boosting the take-up of the Ajax (Asynchronous
JavaScript and XML) web development standards for interactive web
applications. Ajax use had increased by 12%, Evans Data found.
