Salesforce.com is expanding its on-demand business
application service by giving users a platform and a programming
language to link their applications into more of their back-end
systems.
The Apexconnect set of technologies are designed to allow
Salesforce.com applications to link into legacy software, web
services and other on-demand applications more easily, and stay
connected during a Salesforce.com upgrade.
The potential benefit is for users to gain a single, integrated
view of all relevant customer data in one place.
Apexconnect supports SAP R/3, Oracle 11i and about 25 other
common back-office applications, including Microsoft Office,
Outlook and Lotus Notes.
It includes Connectout, a messaging application programming
interface that allows other applications to be notified immediately
of business events in Salesforce, such as the creation of a
customer account or the closing of a sales opportunity.
The new technology follows Salesforce.com's release of
Appexchange, an online directory where users can share vertical
industry applications accessed via Salesforce's hosted service.
"Apexconnect is a multi-tenant aspirin for the headache of
application integration," said Marc Benioff, chief executive at
Salesforce.com.
