ING Direct has completed "its most complex IT project to
date" using an onshore and offshore programming team from Capgemini
to support the bank's move to become a mortgage
provider.
The bank's first foray into mortgage lending came after 18
months of development work. Paul Coad, the Capgemini account
director responsible for the project, said the bank wanted the
application developed quickly, so a Mumbai-based Capgemini team of
65 moved over to the UK to work alongside ING's project team.
The application developed integrated IT systems using a service
oriented architecture based on Java and XML.
ING said the aim was to provide customers applying for mortgages
- by phone or online - with a simpler and faster experience.
Previously, ING Direct only offered saving accounts. An ING
Direct spokesman said, "It is massively more complex to offer
mortgages compared with saving account and involves links to the
Land Registry and solicitors."
