Security start-up DriveSentry has launched a “firewall
for drives” that works by monitoring the applications writing to a
computer’s drives.
The DriveSentry product allows only trusted applications to
write to drives, detecting any unauthorised applications and
alerting the user. It also allows users to control the types of
files that can be saved.
DriveSentry will detect attempts by viruses and trojans to write
themselves to drives rather than the traditional anti-virus
technique of detecting viruses by their signatures. The company
claims this will stop new viruses that have yet to be detected by
anti-virus firms.
All users have a standard set of rules that can be used on
installation. DriveSentry connects users to a central advisor
server and provides a standard set of rules that can be used on
installation. It has been built to run on Windows 2000, Windows XP,
Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista.
