Security firm Trend Micro has announced a new service aimed at identifying botnet activity – networks of compromised machines that can be remotely controlled by an attacker.

Botnets are used to carry out distributed denial-of-service attacks, distribute spam, steal identities through phishing and other criminal activities.

Trend Micro’s InterCloud Security Service offers users the ability to quarantine and – if required – clean up bot-infected PCs and is designed to meet the high-end performance and scalability needs of internet service providers, universities and other major network providers.

Users are given access to a service delivery platform that provides threat intelligence and security updates from Trend Micro’s bot identification team, while a web-based management portal allows centralised policy and update management, and can provide customisable reports on recent policy violations.
