Minor change can help train for disaster

Companies should use small disruptions to the business to train their staff in business continuity techniques that will help the company survive a major disaster, Gartner advised last week.

Gartner research vice-president Roberta Witty said the most advanced companies were using events such as changing a supplier, a change in the market, or problems with accessing an outlying facility as learning exercises for more serious problems.

At the same time, the most advanced firms are moving away from business continuity plans that focus on restoring data and technology towards more people-focused planning. In particular, this involves putting in communication systems.
