A common perception regarding virtualisation is that it
is only suitable for companies large enough to deploy it.
Virtualisation supplier PlateSpin is aiming to shatter this
illusion.
The company has launched PowerStore, an online initiative, which
it hopes will give small- to medium-sized businesses and
department-level users of large organisations easier access to its
server consolidation and virtualisation software.
PowerStore proposes to gives datacentre users the convenience to
rent PlateSpin’s established enterprise-class PowerRecon and
PowerConvert products that support virtualisation. The technology
can be obtained directly from the PlateSpin website or through
participating PlateSpin partner websites.
"The introduction of the PowerStore… creates an easy entry point
for many companies that have invested in virtualisation," says
Stephen Pollack, PlateSpin CEO.
Bob Gill, chief research officer of research firm TheInfoPro,
says, "Usage-based pricing is an innovative pricing structure,
which will be embraced by datacentres. By providing pricing
structures that do not depend on CPU power or static allocation of
physical boxes, [such] solutions are paving the way to
[virtualisation] cost structures that are more equitable and
affordable."
