EDF Energy has managed to keep its mainframe capacity
the same for the past three years despite the number of records on
its database increasing by two million a year.
With the latest round of energy price increases, many domestic
users are looking to switch suppliers. EDF gains and loses about
one million customers each year, meaning the mainframe database
grows by two million records.
Benoit Laclau, managing director of the business improvement and
technology arm at EDF Energy, said, "Datacentre and application
support teams have worked on a series of initiatives to ensure
customer growth and associated data and processing demand could be
contained within existing capacity." This has involved tuning batch
and online applications and identifying integration
inefficiencies.
These initiatives have included improving the categorisation of
workloads and priorities, allowing EDF to make more efficient use
of the mainframe.
Laclau said, "Working together with our colleagues in the
business, we continue to highlight practices that place high demand
on the system and we have adapted our output operations to
accommodate later delivery of print output due to elongated batch
elapsed times."
