IBM is planning to invest $40m over the next five years
to support SAP on its System z mainframe platform.
Its aim is to make its z9 Enterprise Class and Business Class
family of servers a consolidation platform for SAP.
The programme, called IBM System z9 Advantage for SAP
Applications uses DB2 version 8, the company’s specialty System z
Integrated Information Processor (zIIP), a processor for
data-centric applications and the Integrated Facility for Linux
(IFL).
According to IBM, the setup it can offer will improve business
resiliency of high-end SAP application environments by offering
features like concurrent backup and reorganisation
capabilities.
In a parallel sysplex (high availability technology used mission
critical computing), the operating system and database maintenance
can be done concurrently - with SAP applications running, IBM
said.
One user of SAP on the mainframe is Endress+Hauser, a global
manufacturer of process control equipment, which has moved its
Unix-based SAP R/3 system onto a z900 running Linux.
