Microsoft has launched its software asset management
system in the UK, which is designed to make it easier for firms to
manage their software licences.
The Customer Software Asset Management (SAM) toolkit can either
be implemented by enterprises themselves or used by service
providers to deliver better software management at firms.
The product can be used to complete a software inventory, check
software licences and to match software with the right licences
held.
Microsoft has launched the product into the UK after first
unveiling it some time ago.
It is already being used by companies in North America, and
Microsoft has developed a programme to train up service providers
to use the product to develop their software asset management
operations.
Microsoft recently moved to simplify its own licensing
structure, but it acknowledges that software licensing management
is something that many companies continue to struggle over, despite
facing big fines if they are found to be using unlicensed
products.
Similar software asset management products are available from
IBM and CA.
