Social networking website MySpace was shut down for more
than half a day after a power outage at its
datacentre.
The site, which has an estimated 57 million users worldwide and
two million in the UK, lets users design their own homepage, post
music and blog. It has been credited with launching the careers of
recently emerged popstars, who are able to build up a fanbase by
posting their music online.
The site is now up and running again – but it has been a tough
week for MySpace users, who experienced the shutdown just days
after security experts warned that they may have been infected with
adware spread by an internet banner advert on social networking
sites.
MySpace was acquired for £340m last year by Rupert Murdoch’s News
Corporation. The company is now considering selling its search
engine function in a move that is likely to spark interest from
advertisers seeking to target MySpace’s young user base.
