VMware has announced the general availability of its
free VMware Server virtualisation platform after a five month beta
programme.
The free product has already seen over 700,000 downloads as part
of the beta, and VMware is now offering enterprise-class support
for the product at a charge.
The free hosted virtualisation product works in both Linux and
Windows environments, and can be used with the VMware VirtualCenter
solution to centrally provision, monitor and manage VMware Server
deployments.
With VMware Server, users can quickly create and provision new
server capacity by partitioning a physical server into multiple
virtual machines, allowing firms to reduce their hardware
costs.
VMware Server is the successor to the established VMware GSX
Server platform that was introduced in 2001.
The Enterprise-class support list price for Gold level support
is £200 for a one-year subscription per two processors. Platinum
support is available at £255. VMware VirtualCenter for VMware
Server costs £340 per two processors.
VMware Server is available at no charge for immediate download
