Microsoft has updated a security patch it issued earlier
this month after finding that it caused problems for a number of
users using dial-up internet connections.
The MS06-025 patch was one of a dozen released by Microsoft as
part of its monthly scheduled patching cycle, and was designed to
address critical security flaws in the way Windows manages routing
and remote access.
The flaw potentially allowed remote attackers to take over
users’ machines.
But soon after the patch was released, Microsoft confirmed that
some users dialling into corporate and education networks, along
with some customers with dial-up connections with ISPs, were being
cut off once the patch was installed.
But although Microsoft said it had solved the dial-up problem,
it now faces a new threat connected to the original vulnerability.
Earlier this week the company confirmed that exploit code for the
vulnerability was circulating on the internet after being published
on an internet security research site.
Microsoft has urged users to install the updated patch as soon
as possible to prevent any possible attacks.
