Most outages in Oracle databases are caused by hardware
problems and not security problems, according to user survey
results published by the Independent Oracle Users Group
(IOUG).
Hardware problems caused around half of the downtime incidents
in Oracle databases over the last year.
The survey, based on the responses from around 270 IOUG members,
also revealed that more than 70% of companies had suffered from a
database crash lasting more than an hour over the last 12
months.
While security and hacking incidents had been responsible for
only 1% of outages, power outages were responsible for 7% of
downtime. Natural disasters accounted for 4% of incidents.
In addition to hardware being responsible for half of the
problems, network difficulties, application stack glitches and
problems with the database itself made up a third of the other
incidents reported by IOUG members.
Members also reported common database performance slowdowns,
with 40% of respondents reporting at least one slowdown every two
months.
