MySpace is considering selling its search engine
function to a leading provider.
The social networking site has an estimated 57 million users
worldwide, with two million in the UK. It allows users to build
their own homepage and interact with other users who share their
interests.
MySpace was acquired for £340m last year by News Corporation and
Rupert Murdoch’s firm is still working out ways to maximise its
investment.
By selling its search engine function, MySpace could give
advertisers valuable access to its young audience. The established
search facilities of Google, Yahoo or Microsoft would be able to
increase the value of this proposition.
MySpace competes with Facebook, MSN Spaces and Yahoo 360, among
others.
