The question: How do I break into investment
banking?
I work for British Airways but my aim is to get into IT in the
City as I like the idea of investment banking. My previous roles
include management consultancy and I have completed almost two
years of a physics degree.
What would you recommend for someone with minimal experience?
What professional courses would you recommend? Apart from Java,
what other languages would you recommend learning? Being a
non-graduate are my chances limited for gaining a great job in the
City?
The solution: Find IT courses that are linked to
banking
For most, switching careers is not an easy process. You have to
start again, consider yourself a junior, and look at a decrease in
your monthly income. It is always beneficial to invest in some
training courses, but be careful of over doing it. You will need to
keep knocking on doors.
Getting in to investment banking IT is exceptionally hard if you
do not have experience of working in the City. There are some
training companies that will have set up alliances with companies
to take on recent course attendees once you complete the course so
do some research to this to see if any are aligned with companies
in the City.
If you want to pursue the software development route, I would
strongly advise learning the
.net Framework. This is by far the most sought after skill
companies are look for when recruiting staff.
I have come across many candidates who get jobs in the City who
have not been to university.
