BlackBerry maker RIM has acquired software firm
Ascendent Systems to further develop the functionality of its
“push” e-mail devices.
RIM has also updated its enterprise mail server system to help
companies achieve easier deployments and add greater functionality
when integrating mobile devices with corporate networks.
Ascendent, which has been acquired for an undisclosed sum, will
become a wholly-owned subsidiary of RIM.
Ascendent develops software that delivers traditional corporate
desk phone services to mobile devices.
The acquisition comes a week after RIM paid out $612.5m (£360m)
to settle its long-running patent battle with NTP, which had
threatened to close down its US network as a result of patent
infringements by RIM.
RIM has also just launched its BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1
platform, which allows companies to more easily deliver instant
messaging and corporate intranet connectivity to their mobile
BlackBerry users.
