Opposition members of Haringey Council in north-east
London have accused the ruling party of giving evasive answers to
questions about a £24.6m "Tech Refresh" project that has cost more
than double the original budget.
After Computer Weekly's disclosures about Tech Refresh (21
February), the council held a meeting of the Overview and Scrutiny
Committee to discuss the project.
The opposition councillors asked about the cost and use of
consultants, and the lack of early warning about overspending, but
claim they were given evasive answers.
They say the ruling Labour group, instead of providing
information, referred the questioner to a report on the Tech
Refresh project written by the Audit Commission, a council
watchdog.
Neil Williams, head of the Lib-Dems on Haringey Council, said
the answers to the questions were not in the commission's
report.
Haringey has now convened a further meeting to discuss the
report. A council spokesman said: "We have responded publicly to
detailed questions from councillors on a number of occasions and
will continue to do so.
"We have put the full Audit Commission review into the public
domain, fully accepted its findings and produced an action plan
addressing the auditor's concerns."
