Novell has launched its openSUSE project with the release of a
beta 1 version of Suse Linux 10.0 – codenamed “Prague” – to
developers as part of a shift to an open source methodology for
developing Suse Linux.
Developers will now be able to contribute to the review, testing
and development of new versions of Suse. They are invited to hunt
for bugs and suggest patches for Suse 10.0 in the first stage of
open community participation.
Novell hopes that throwing open the Suse source code to
developers will help make the operating system more widely
available and broaden the base of users.
David Patrick, vice-president and general manager for Linux and
open source platforms and services at Novell, said, “In 2003, we
moved our company to Linux. Now we want to move the world to
Linux.
“With openSUSE, our goals are to make it easy for anyone to
access Suse Linux and to provide a place where developers can
advance the state of the art of Linux. The project provides an
environment where new ideas are welcomed, incubated and implemented
rapidly.”
The beta 2 release of Suse 10.0 is timetabled for 18 August.
